Container Planting
Think of Laschi's Garden Center for all your gardening needs, including Container Planting. Container Planting is fun and easy. What a wonderful way to add color to any size deck, patio, or entryway of your home. Here are some container planting tips:
1. Container: Any container will do. Use your imagination. Use different shapes and sizes. The most important thing to remember is drainage
2. Drainage: All containers should have holes in the bottom to allow water to drain away from the soil. If there are no holes in the bottom, and you are not able to drill any, try using 3 inches of gravel on the bottom of the container. You can also use crushed aluminum cans for bigger containers without adding much additional weight.
3. Soil: You want to make sure you use a planting medium that drains well. You can mix your own equal parts of compost, peat moss, and sand, or purchase a good quality potting mixture such as Moo Mix or Coast of Maine.
4. Plants: It's your choice. Just remember to pair sun with sun plants and shade with shade plants. Look for color and texture. You can create contrast by choosing variegated and dark foliage plants. Try to remember to plant in odd numbers for a well balanced container.
5. Don't forget watering and fertilizer. Use a water soluble fertilizer such as Neptunes Harvest every time you water. You can also use a time release fertilizer at the time of planting.
You can find this tip and others in a printable PDF version on our Tips and Library page.
